When and how did you first find CrossFit? Google based on a rumor that one was opening in Greenwich.  Have always had an interest but nothing worked schedule wise until you opened.

What about CrossFit 06830 appealed to you and has kept you involved?  The constant challenge and variety of workouts

It takes a lot of commitment to keep showing up at the crack of dawn, and it’s really something to realize the give and take that people and families make to come in. What keeps you coming in? Constant improvement in my overall fitness and I find that I am a much more pleasant person after getting crushed 3-4x a week

What about the community? Everyone has a positive attitude and that definitely helps when you are pushing so hard.

There’s a lot to get out of a gym like ours other than what happens in classes. Speaking of that, lets hear a bit about you outside of the gym.  I work in real estate private equity at a firm in Greenwich and workout in the mornings because i never know when I’m going to get out of work.  I have an 8 month old daughter and outside of the gym and the office she is my priority.

How about hobbies outside of CrossFit? What do you do to relax? Golf, skiing and eating (don’t kill me EJ) & believe it or not cross fit is very relaxing to me

Did you have any injuries before CF? How have you dealt with them? Yes I herniated a disk 5 yrs ago and went to an ortho and then did pt, hurt it again a few years back and used a good chiropractor and was much happier.  one of the huge draws about our gym to me was the focus on mobility.  since joining i have improved my stamina, strength and mobility and feel better than I have in years

Any nicknames? Many but none that i would like to share :)

Last stock question: What do you think we should look for in a future Athlete of the Month? Someone who is motivated, attends frequently and wants to improve everyday....kit????

There’s a lot to get out of a gym like ours other than what happens in classes. Speaking of that, lets hear a bit about you outside of the gym.   I have two daughters that I love to spend as much time as I possibly can; along with my husband.  I also enjoy doing a lot of DIY crafts. My husband and I are also training for a Spartan Challenge this spring.

When and how did you first find CrossFit?  So, I have a lot of friends that are into CrossFit in other locations.  I was tempted to try it out near me.  I tried a class and then a few days later on April 1st 2014 I joined.

What about CrossFit 06830 appealed to you and has kept you involved? There are so many great things about CrossFit06830 that I had to really think about this to make sure I hit the highlights.  I love the fact that the coaches differentiate and meet you at your level.  Can't do handstand pushups?  No, ok, what about a handstand?  No, ok, what about getting inverted against a wall?  No, ok, how about we just practicing kicking a little off the ground.  Even if that's too far, something tells me the coaches would have another adaptation to help.  I also love that the staff isn't out for their own agenda.  Usually in places like this, people give you their additional agenda and judge you if you don't agree with them.  For example, there are some places that start telling you how a particular diet is necessary or you should be taking x, y or z supplement.  The staff at CrossFit 06830 don't do that you.  Instead, they give you information if you ask them, but only on request.  As if those two reasons weren't awesome enough, they are truly fantastic about attention.  Are you learning a skill?  If so, don't worry about your weight, worry about your form.  The coaches make sure that everything is correct before you start placing weight on top of it.  And if there is something incorrect with your form, they break it down for you and tell you how to fix your mistake and avoid it in the future.  PRs aren't private.  Every time you get a PR, you place it with pride on the PR board for the month and celebrate.  Granted all the coaches can beat me in every area, but they celebrate my PR as if it was the greatest accomplishment and that makes a difference.  And finally, they truly care.  There is not “mailing it in" with the coaches.  They love their jobs and it shows.  CrossFit 06830 has many more pluses but those are on my highlight reel

It takes a lot of commitment to keep showing up, and it’s really something to realize the give and take that people and families make to come in. What keeps you coming in? Honestly, it's the improvement.  I am not about to win any fitness awards, but I've come extremely far in just a month and a half.  I love the fact that I can track skills and see how much I've grown.  It's a challenge against yourself to do your best.  If you commit, you'll see the difference.  The workouts change constantly so it's never boring, and always keeping you on your toes.  And the coaches are going to challenge you when they know you can do more, and really acknowledge when you have given it your all.

What about the community?  It's like Cheers because after a few weeks, everyone knows your name and you know everyone.  And oh my goodness.  It's like joining a Happy Club.  Everyone has off days, don't get me wrong.  But truly, you're going to be hard pressed to find a group that's so welcoming and happy for you.  PRs are celebrated and congratulated no matter how they compare to their own status.  On top of that, it's like working out with cheerleaders!  If you're in a workout and you see someone struggling, you're going to cheer them on for the last rep or round or minute, whatever is their barrier.  Taking that moment doesn't seem like a lot, but it makes a huge difference.

There’s a lot to get out of a gym like ours other than what happens in classes. Speaking of that, lets hear a bit about you outside of the gym.   Let's see, I have been an 8th grade math teacher for ten years and love it.  I love math to the point where I got my masters in mathematics like a crazy person.  I used to be a competitive classical flutist.  I've played at Carnegie Hall and Tanglewood.  I try to do something once a year that scares me senseless but it's kept me pushing my limits.  This has included sky diving, going on an international trip alone, completing a Tough Mudder and numerous other items.  I traveled with my youth group in high school and was blessed by Pope John Paul II, who just became a saint.  I was born and raised in Greenwich.  I have a few tattoos and probably getting more.  I have a loving family and two nephews that I adore spoiling.  Oh, and yeah, I'm getting married at the end of the month!!  Not that I'm panicking or anything.

How about hobbies outside of CrossFit? What do you do to relax? I love long walks on the beach, candlelit dinner, just kidding.  I am a music person from the moment I wake up until I go to sleep.  What I listed to changes on my mood and energy level.  I listen to everything...even country and classical music.  Family is a huge part of me so you might find me at a family dinner or with friends( who I believe are family without the blood ties).  I travel when I can find the time.  Trips to the city are always fun.  And I'm a bit of an adrenaline junky so anything in that area always seems fun.

Any nicknames? SB, B-Money, and Downtown Shannon Brown are the only ones I'm willing to put in print.  Although by changing my name, I'm guessing I'm going to have to get a new one.

Last stock question: What do you think we should look for in a future Athlete of the Month? Someone who is positive and putting forth great effort.  You don't have to be the most athletic, but you do have to be doing your best and helping out others.

"Prior to joining Crossfit06830, I was having trouble finding the motivation to fit a workout program into my everyday life.  Now, rather than rolling over and hitting the snooze button or just going through the motions in the gym, I am psyched every workout to learn a new skill or set a new personal record.  Jay and EJ are a big part of the reason why I am so hooked on Crossfit.  They do a great job of tailoring the program to each person in the class - pushing us hard, but always making technique and safety the priorities.  They foster a great community atmosphere where everyone is very welcoming and encouraging."  Thanks Jay and EJ - I am really enjoying Crossfit06830!

When and how did you find CrossFit? It’s kind of a weird story but here it is! This past March, I went down to Anderson, SC to visit Anderson University. I was looking to transfer to the school so I was checking out the area surrounding it. I stopped into a Christian store and met a really cool guy. We got to talking and he told me he was a CrossFit coach! I had heard of CrossFit but was always too intimidated to try it. I figured if I was going to work out with him down in SC, I should be in shape so I didn’t look idiotic! Haha that’s why I started but I am doing it completely for myself now! I love how strong I feel.

What about CF 06830 appealed to you and has kept you involved? CrossFit 06830 appealed to me because it is so close to my house. It’s only a 5 minute drive! The incredible convenience it is to drive over and have a killer workout pushes me to come every time! Another reason CF 06830 appealed to me was because of the coaches. The way they teach each move and really drill on form before adding weight is great. It has saved me from injuring myself and has given me the confidence to lift amounts of weight I never thought I could. Honestly, I think the fact that I have been improving and growing as a person inside and out has kept me coming! The changes I have seen in myself keeps me motivated.

It takes a lot of commitment to keep showing up, and it’s really something to realize the give and take that people and families make to come in. What keeps you coming in? There are so many reasons I keep coming in. I love seeing the coaches and they always have some way for me to improve my movements. The fact that they give every person in that gym individual attention and really care about our form is amazing. I used to go to the Edge Fitness and I would see personal trainers training clients with horrific form and they didn’t do anything about it! It scared me when they picked up a barbell! Another reason I keep coming in is because I love to work out! I have always been involved with sports and fitness. I play softball, volleyball and I guess I could include bowling since I competed for years. I love challenging myself physically and mentally and CrossFit has brought my efforts to a new level!

What about the community? The community is unbelievable! I never thought a gym could be so close knit and be so focused on being a team. I have made close friends in the last few months that inspire me and keep me in check with workouts and life. I love coming to work out and see them! We push and motivate each other day in and day out. It is the best when a fellow CrossFitter and I are neck and neck in a WOD!! Just the constant encouragement makes working out easier and even when you feel tired and slow and just want to give up, people are there cheering for you to finish! There is something about being cheered on; it always seems to omit the physical and mental pain you’re feeling in that moment. I really couldn’t ask for a better group of people to work out with!

There’s a lot to get out of a gym like ours other than what happens in classes. Speaking of that, lets hear a bit about you outside of the gym? I am going to be a sophomore in college and I will be transferring to Anderson University in South Carolina. I was at Sacred Heart University for my first year and decided I needed to go south for school. I am studying criminal justice and I will be testing at multiple police departments in the spring! For work now, I am a babysitter. I absolutely love my job! I also help out friends who need certain tasks like for a few weeks this summer I was a driver because my friend couldn’t drive. It sounds pathetic but a lot of my time is spent either at CrossFit or walking! I don’t like sitting for very long. I get bored so easily! In the fall, I play on an adult co-ed volleyball league in Greenwich and I absolutely love it!

How about hobbies outside of CrossFit? What do you do to relax? I spend a lot of time cooking; I cook everything I eat. I love baking and I hope to open a bakery someday! If anyone is having a sweet craving, you let me know and I’ll hook you up with something delicious haha I also enjoy running. I have a route that I always run; I go around Bruce Park and then down Steamboat Road to the water! It is so beautiful and peaceful. I enjoy walking a lot more than running now a days. Some days, I am enjoying my walk so much, I walked upwards of 8 miles and don’t even realize! I also love to read on the beach. Summer time is my time! I love the beach, boating, swimming, paddle boarding, wakeboarding, and much more! Luckily I live only a couple blocks from Greenwich harbor so getting to the water is easy. I am also very involved with my faith. I go to gospel concerts all over! I once drove 6 hours to see Jason Crabb haha I guess you could call me a dedicated fan of God!

Did you have any injuries before CF? How have you dealt with them? Before CrossFit, I had many injuries. Most were from being clumsy and falling or tripping but in high school, I was playing volleyball and I went up to spike a ball and I landed wrong on my ankle. I ended up tearing ligaments and tendons and I couldn’t really play for two months. And most recently, I had a bulged disk in my back from running so frequently about a year and a half ago. I have always had bad knees because of the wear and tear of volleyball and running. My back actually started hurting again about a month into CrossFit but I went to Dr. Silverman and all I can say is that he works magic! My back feels amazing.

Any nicknames? I grew up with a few inappropriate nicknames and please use your imagination. My names Virginia…what does that sound like and take away the -ia and what do you get? Haha I never got offended by it because kids are so immature! One nickname that I love that my friend calls me is Leilani. It is from Hawaiian origin and it means heavenly or a child from heaven. We have known each other since kindergarten and I have gotten her through some tough times so she thinks I was sent from God to help her through them! I have recently gotten a new nickname at the gym with my friend Jeana. We are called JV!

Last stock question: What do you think we should look for in a future Athlete of the Month? In a future Athlete of the Month, you should look for someone who is not only dedicated but that also brings joy and laughter to the gym. Working out doesn’t always have to be serious! Sometimes dancing and singing in between sets of squats or deadlifts will do you good!
